There are some places that simply make you stop and smile, and Silo Ridge Peony Farm near Milford is one of them.

My husband Mark and I, along with my brother-in-law Kevin and sister-in-law Karen, spent a beautiful spring afternoon exploring this family-owned peony farm just outside of Milford. As we approached, we could already see colorful rows of peony blooms stretching across the land. The final stretch of road is gravel, but don’t let that deter you. The view waiting at the end is absolutely worth it.

Silo Ridge Peony Farm is a working family farm with more than 7,000 peony plants representing over 250 varieties. From classic favorites to rare and award-winning blooms, the farm showcases an incredible collection gathered through years of research and travel by owner, Shelly Derner, and her family.

What stood out to me immediately was how welcoming and relaxed the atmosphere felt. Visitors are encouraged to wander the fields at their own pace, taking in the colors, fragrances, and beauty of the blooms. Benches and resting spots are scattered throughout the property, making it easy to slow down and enjoy the experience.

The farm is only open for a few short weeks each spring during peak bloom season, which makes visiting feel even more special. Families were strolling through the rows, couples were taking photos, and gardeners were carefully noting their favorite varieties for future planting.

One of my favorite parts was seeing people create their own bouquets. You can purchase a ready-made arrangement or build one yourself from the available blooms. The gift shop inside the barn also offers Silo Ridge apparel and other farm merchandise. Depending on the day, there may be a food truck on-site.

If you’re looking for a peaceful outing, pack a picnic and enjoy lunch at one of the picnic tables or on the patio near the barn. The wide-open spaces make it easy for children to explore while adults soak in the scenery.
