EOH Explorer Series | Gehling Greenhouse

If you’ve spent much time driving Iowa gravel roads, you know some of the best places don’t look flashy from the outside. Gehling Greenhouse, near Wall Lake, is one of those spots.

The first time we pulled in, it honestly just looked like a real working farm. If it weren’t for the sign, I probably would’ve wondered if we were in the right place. But once you start walking through the greenhouses, everything changes. Suddenly you’re surrounded by rows of flowers, hanging baskets, vegetables, and more color than you expect to find tucked out in the middle of the countryside.

What stood out most to me wasn’t just the plants though. It was the family behind it.

Chris and Liz Gehling run the greenhouse alongside their three young kids and Chris’s mom, Eileen. You can feel that family atmosphere right away. Kids are helping, people are moving plants around, customers are stopping to talk, and everything feels very real and down-to-earth. It reminded me a lot of the kind of places many farm families grow up around, where work, family, and community all blend together.

As a mom raising kids involved in agriculture, I appreciate places like this because they give people a chance to see what rural family life actually looks like outside of social media stereotypes or polished tourism stops. This isn’t a staged experience. It’s a family business built through hard work, long days, and a genuine love for what they do.

The greenhouse itself sits among the rolling hills outside Wall Lake and makes for a fun spring or early summer stop, especially if you enjoy gardening or just want a slower-paced afternoon drive. There are goats and cows on the property for kids to peek at, lots of beautiful photo spots among the flowers, and enough variety that it’s hard to leave empty-handed.

A couple practical things to know before you go, parking is free but somewhat limited, and the property is uneven in places, so strollers can be a little tricky. There’s also a portable restroom onsite, so I’d recommend planning ahead before making the drive out there. Cash or check are the accepted forms of payment.

And if you visit, make sure to stop and talk with Eileen for a few minutes. She was one of my favorite parts of the experience.

EOH Explorer Series | Rail Explorers Boone Division

There are some experiences that feel like they belong on a bucket list the second you try them, and Rail Explorers in Boone is absolutely one of those places.

Tucked along the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad, this ride combines scenic Iowa views, a little adventure, and a surprisingly relaxing pace that makes it perfect for families with older kids, couples, or groups looking for something different to do in Iowa. And honestly? There’s nothing else quite like it in the state.

At first glance, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Because Rail Explorers is a national company with only a handful of locations across the United States, I wondered if it might feel overly commercialized. But once we arrived, the atmosphere completely changed my mind.

The check-in area was welcoming and thoughtfully designed with picnic tables, cozy seating areas, string lights, selfie spots, and little gathering spaces that made it feel fun before the ride even started. It had the kind of relaxed energy that makes you want to slow down and enjoy the experience instead of rushing through it.

After a quick safety overview, we climbed onto the rail bikes and headed down the tracks. The ride itself lasts about two hours and takes you across scenic bridges, through peaceful stretches of Iowa countryside, and toward a beautiful turnaround point along the river.

That turnaround area may have been one of my favorite parts. There are picnic tables, umbrellas, chairs, and gorgeous river views that make it the perfect place to pause for snacks or a small picnic before heading back. If I went again, I’d absolutely pack a small charcuterie board and drinks to enjoy during the stop.

The bridges are truly the highlight of the ride. Rolling across them on the rail bikes gives you that rare mix of excitement and calm that’s hard to describe until you experience it yourself.

This is also one of those places that changes with the seasons. Summer is beautiful, but I can only imagine how incredible the fall colors would look along the tracks.

A few practical tips: reservations are recommended, parking is a little tight, and there are no restrooms once you leave the station, so plan ahead. Kids can ride with parents, but little ones do need to remain strapped into their seats during the ride. There is some noise so if anyone in your group is sensitive to sounds, having ear plugs along is a good idea.

If you’re planning the trip, I’d recommend turning it into an overnight in Boone. Grab dinner in town, slow down, and make a full rural Iowa getaway out of it.

For families raising fair kids, running between activities, and constantly moving through busy seasons, this felt like one of those rare experiences where everyone could simply enjoy the moment together.

Take the ride. It’s worth it.

If you’re a biking enthusiast, you’re in luck! Perry is right on the Raccoon River Valley Trail, and in April of 2024, 9-mile extension connecting the High Trestle Trail opened, making it even easier to explore the area on two wheels.

We were lucky enough to be in town during the Farmer’s Market. It was a great way to experience local vendors and see the community come together. We even stumbled upon a quaint little Sinclair store, restored to look just like it did in the past.

One of the highlights of Perry is its vibrant downtown art scene. Local artists have decorated the alleys, buildings, and streets with incredible artwork. Be sure to check out the sculptures, especially at night when they’re beautifully lit.

We stayed in the Mexican suite, complete with a large, jetted tub, and also got a peek at other rooms like the George Soumas suite, the Louis Armstrong suite, and the Japanese room.

When you’re not relaxing in your room, you can go bowling in their private basement alley, unwind in the sauna, or enjoy a drink at the Inter-Urban lounge before having dinner at the Pattee Café, all without leaving the hotel!

Premiere Iowa Agritourism Event Scales Across the State

The original Evolution of the Heartland event was held in Manning and Audubon in 2022 and again in 2023, and this year it is scaling across the state to be held in four separate locations. These immersive experiences will showcase the heart of America’s rural communities and the evolution of agriculture to those who are unfamiliar with the cutting-edge advancements happening across Iowa.

The main goal of these events is to highlight agritourism and entrepreneurial opportunities in rural Iowa, something that has not easily been done in the past. Evolution of the Heartland promotes rural communities working together to entice the next generation of Iowa’s visitors, residents, workforce, and entrepreneurs to visit, live, work, and play right here in the heartland.

“Evolution of the Heartland elevates the visibility of rural Iowa communities and the opportunities that exist beyond the cornfields,” shared Shelly Greving, visionary creator of Evolution of the Heartland and owner of Emerge Marketing Solutions. “Since inception two years ago, our plan has always been to feature as many rural communities as possible and highlight the entrepreneurial and agricultural advancements happening in Iowa.”

Evolution of the Heartland participants will be immersed in local tours showcasing high-quality innovation, agricultural advancements, and entrepreneurial investments occurring in rural Iowa. Attendees will get a ‘taste’ of rural Iowa by dining at local restaurants, and each location will feature its twist on locally sourced foods and emphasize the farm-to-table connection. There will also be an opportunity to explore downtown businesses and network with local business owners. Attendees will get a chance to hear from local entrepreneurs about their inspirations and the community’s role in helping them start and grow their businesses.

After a day of immersive tours, learning, and networking, host communities may choose to host a local vendor show and community reception, inviting the local community to learn more about agricultural opportunities happening in their backyard.  More details for each event will be announced as the dates get closer.

When sharing the origin of this concept, Greving recalls, “My participation in the Leadership Iowa program and my connection to many rural communities inspired me to showcase these communities to others who may think that Iowa is just a fly-over state.” She continues, “There are so many incredible entrepreneurs and innovators here who are thriving because of the support they receive from their communities, and I felt this needed to be showcased on a more regional and national level.”

Greving emphasized that “small businesses are the backbone of this country, and Iowa has a great economy and support system to help those visionaries launch their businesses. Iowans are humble, hardworking people, and while that is commendable, it is also evident that America’s heartland needs more similarly grounded and motivated people to continue to be strong.”

These events are ideal for anyone interested in learning more about agriculture, entrepreneurial opportunities, and rural Iowa communities. “In the past, we have had lawmakers, government employees, bankers, insurance underwriters, and other community leaders attend these events to gain a better understanding of what’s happening across our state,” shared Greving.

Registration for all events opens on May 1st and is limited to 50 people for each location. Registration will close three weeks before each event or when all spots have been reserved. Early bird registration features a $25 discount per person and ends June 1st. Participants can sign up to be notified when registration opens at www.evolutionoftheheartland.com.

Join the Evolution of the Heartland tour and discover what the future holds for rural Iowa and the agriculture industry. See first-hand how agriculture has evolved from its early roots as well as the advancement of technology in many Iowa agricultural businesses and Main Street communities.

Evolution of the Heartland is accepting local and statewide sponsorships, as well as prospective 2025 community event hosts. For more information, please complete the online forms or contact Event Coordinator, Annie Greve, at info@evolutionoftheheartland.com. Follow along with event updates on Facebook and Instagram @evolutionoftheheartland to learn more.
