Littlefield Recreation Area: Family-Friendly Cabins & Outdoor Adventure Near Exira, Iowa

As a busy work-from-home mom of three, I’m always looking for places that help our family slow down. Sometimes the best adventures aren’t the big trips we’ve spent months planning. They’re the places tucked just off the interstate that surprise us in the best possible way.

That’s exactly what happened when we discovered Littlefield Recreation Area near Exira.

Located only about seven minutes north of Exit 70 on Interstate 80, Littlefield feels worlds away from the rush of everyday life. What we expected to be a nice county park stay turned into one of the most impressive cabin experiences we’ve had anywhere in Iowa.

The cabins are best described as glamping with a view. They are modern, spacious, and incredibly clean, offering all the comforts of home while still keeping you connected to the outdoors. Ours featured a fully equipped kitchen, comfortable living spaces, multiple televisions, bunk beds for the kids, and even a second family room in the basement. Depending on your group, the cabins can comfortably sleep seven to nine guests.

One thing that really stood out was the affordability. Family travel can get expensive quickly, especially when you need enough space for everyone to spread out and relax. The six smaller cabins range from about $140–$165 per night depending on the season, making them a surprisingly budget-friendly option for the quality you receive. If you’re planning a larger gathering, the Elk Lodge sleeps up to 14 guests and ranges from $260–$300 per night. When you consider the full kitchens, multiple living spaces, beautiful outdoor setting, and all the included amenities, Littlefield offers a getaway experience that feels much more expensive than it is without costing a huge amount of money.

What stood out most wasn’t just the cabin itself. It was the people.

During our stay, we spent time talking with one of the DNR staff members who shared the story of the park’s growth since 2019. His pride in the project was contagious. He told us about helping build the playground, assisting with the new well installation, and putting finishing touches on the cabins. That kind of personal investment is something you don’t find everywhere.

The campground had the same welcoming atmosphere. Families gathered around campfires, kids rode bikes and scooters through the park, and fellow campers were quick to wave hello or strike up a conversation.

There is plenty to do here, whether you’re planning a family getaway, a couples retreat, or a multi-family weekend. Spend the day kayaking, fishing, hiking, relaxing on the porch, or enjoying an evening campfire. The beach area and two playgrounds make it especially appealing for families with children.

One of my favorite moments came at sunset. The sky stretched endlessly across the water, creating the kind of peaceful view that reminds you why getting outdoors matters.

If you’re staying in the cabins, choose Cabins 1 through 3 for sunset views or Cabins 4 through 6 if you’re an early riser who loves a sunrise with your coffee.

Before heading home, make time to explore nearby Exira and Audubon. Grab a coffee at Goldie’s Coffee Shop, reward the kids with ice cream from Corner Corral Creamery, and browse the unique clothing and home décor finds at Molly’s, housed in a charming restored barn.

Littlefield Recreation Area is proof that you don’t need a luxury resort or a faraway destination to create lasting memories. Sometimes all it takes is a beautiful cabin, a campfire, and a little extra time together outdoors.
